Der Name des Minerals Melanit ist griechischen Ursprungs und wird mit schwarz übersetzt, angelehnt an die schwarze Farbe dieser Andradit-Varietät. Damit gehört Melanit zur Gruppe der Granate; mitunter ist auch die Bezeichnung schwarzer Andradit üblich.
